The X8 is an old phone now, and is available quite cheaply. The Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 looks a lot like the X10 Mini and has similar specs and a similar price. But by increasing the size and resolution of the screen it becomes a lot more usable. The user interface is the same though, and feels dated compared with Android phones from HTC or Samsung. Originally running Android 1.6, it's now been updated to version 2.1, but still lags behind rival phones running 2.3. The custom firmware from Sony Ericsson and O2 also doesn't seem to help with reliability, with some users reporting freezing and crashing. All the other features seem to have been retained however. Connectivity is good, with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB and a 3.5mm audio jack.

The media player is excellent and there's an FM radio with RDS too. aGPS is here, with full support for Google Maps (including Street View) and geo-tagging of photos. A demo version of WisePilot Turn-by-Turn navigation software is included. The built-in memory of 128MB isn't bad to start with, and you can add microSD memory cards of up to 16GB. A 2GB card is included in the sales package. Web browsing is better on the X8 than on the X10 Mini, although it isn't the best, involving clicking zoom buttons, as there's no pinch-to-zoom capability. There's no Flash support either, although on the positive side YouTube videos are fully supported via a dedicated app. The processor is a 600 MHz Qualcomm CPU, the same as used in the X10 Mini, and it's adequate for the type of device. We're relieved to see that the battery power has been boosted significantly compared with the X10 Mini, and battery life isn't a major issue with theX8, although it isn't the best around.

Sony's released a beta version of Ice Cream Sandwich for the Xperia family Phones. It's allowing eager-beaver Android fans to get a scoop of Android 4.0 ahead of the official release. Sony Ericsson is currently rolling out the upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3.4 across its entire 2011 Xperia smartphone. ICS Update For Sony ericsson Xperia Phones

Today Sony's offering up more details about exactly when each of its 2011 (and 2012)Xperia handsets will be getting the latest version of Android. The manufacturer had previously promised updates during Q1, but with just two days of the current quarter remaining, it should come as no surprise that things haven taken a little longer than anticipated. The first Sony devices to get ICS will be the Xperia Arc S, Xperia Neo V and Xperia Ray, starting mid-April. Next up it's the Xperia Arc, Xperia Play,Xperia Neo, Xperia Mini, Xperia Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, Xperia Active and SE Live with Walkman, which will get ICS from "the end of May/early June. If you've just bought a brand new Xperia S, though, you'll be in for a much longer wait. Sony's new European flagship isn't expected to get ICS until late Q2. As we said in our review, the Xperia S is a phone which sorely needs that ICS update, and early adopters will no doubt be frustrated to find themselves at the back of the line. Sony also revealed that for 2011Xperia phones, ICS will be an optional upgrade rather (through the PC Companion app) than a automatic over-the-air update. This is similar to the strategy adopted by Sony Ericsson with the Xperia X10's Gingerbread update. Today Sony Mobile announced a new addition to its Xperia smartphone line-up. The Sony neo L is a mid-range device that is based on the neo V and is destined for the Chinese market. The Xperia neo L will run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich at launch (a first for Sony) and can easily be confused with the neo V as they share similar looks and specifications. However, the neo L also borrows a few design elements from the Xperia PLAY, sans the PlayStation certified joypad.

The handset, which is currently slated for a release in China, carries a 1GHz single-core Snapdragon CPU, 512MB of RAM, and a 4-inch display at 800×480. You’ll also find a front facing VGA camera on the front of the device. 1GB of storage is onboard, although there’s a microSD card slot so you can expand that up to 32GB. At the back, the Xperia neo L carriers a 5MP snapper capable of shooting 720p videos, while a VGA front-facing camera enables video calling.
